We just got back from our third Disney trip in three years — this time with my wife and our six-year-old.

At this point, we’ve made every mistake you can make:

  • overpacking
  • underpacking
  • bringing the wrong gear
  • forgetting the right stuff

And here’s the truth:

Disney isn’t hard because of the parks. It’s hard because of friction.

Heat. Walking. Logistics. Kids getting tired. Frustration. More Heat. You get the drift.

The difference between a great trip and a miserable one usually comes down to a handful of small decisions — starting with what you bring.

This is not a giant checklist.

This is what actually mattered.

If you’re planning your trip, start here:

If You Only Pack 10 Things, Make It These

If I had to do this trip again tomorrow, this is the core setup:

  • Portable charger (non-negotiable)
  • Two pairs of comfortable shoes
  • Lightweight, breathable clothes
  • Cooling towel + portable fan
  • Mineral sunscreen (not the junk they sell in parks
  • A small, functional daypack
  • Refillable water bottle
  • Electrolyte packets
  • Wet wipes
  • A few actually good snacks

Everything else is secondary.

What Actually Made the Biggest Difference

1. Portable Charger (You Will Burn Through Battery)

Your phone is your entire Disney experience:

  • Genie+
  • wait times
  • mobile food orders
  • reservations
  • photos

If your phone dies, your day falls apart.

→ Bring a high-quality option like Anker → Bring two, not one

2. Comfortable Shoes (And Backup Pair)

You will walk 8–10 miles per day.

Not optional.

We rotated between two pairs and it made a huge difference.

→ Breathable running shoes → Backup pair for relief

Pro move: blister patches (you’ll thank yourself)

3. Lightweight, Breathable Clothes

This is where most people get it wrong.

You don’t need outfits. You need heat management.

What worked:

  • Breathable shorts
  • Light-colored t-shirts
  • Moisture-wicking fabrics

Great options:

  • Rhone performance gear

4. A Few “Cool” Disney Items (Not the Generic Stuff)

You don’t want to look like you panic-bought a shirt on Main Street. Or, like you go to Disney a little too often.

Bring 1–2 fun pieces that feel elevated.

Good places to look:

  • RSVLTS (best option here)
  • Disney Amazon storefront

That’s enough. Don’t overdo it.

5. Hat + Sunglasses (Non-Negotiable)

The Florida sun is relentless.

  • Melin → best hats we’ve found
  • Maui Jim → worth it for long days

6. Cooling System (This Changes Everything)

This is the difference-maker.

Bring:

  • Cooling towel
  • Portable fan
  • Electrolytes

This combo alone can save your day.

7. Sunscreen (Bring Your Own — Seriously)

The sunscreen in the parks is:

  • expensive
  • low quality
  • usually chemical-heavy

Bring mineral-based options:

  • Supergoop!
  • Blue Lizard

8. Small, Functional Backpack

You don’t want a giant bag.

You want:

  • light
  • organized
  • easy

This carries:

  • chargers
  • snacks
  • wipes
  • water

9. Water Bottle (Hydration = Survival)

Bring a refillable bottle.

Better yet: → collapsible or lightweight version

10. Snacks (Underrated Move)

Disney food is… well, it's fine.

But:

  • lines are long
  • kids get impatient
  • health and digestion matter

Healthy snacks = leverage.

What We’re Glad We Brought

  • Wet wipes (huge for kids + food cleanup)

  • Portable Bose speaker (hotel downtime)
  • iPad for travel (download content BEFORE)
  • Extra socks (game changer mid-day)
  • Packable rain jacket + umbrella

Florida weather changes fast.

What We Brought (And Didn’t Need)

This is where most people overpack.

Skip:

  • Multiple sweatshirts
  • Too many outfits
  • Bulky bags
  • Excess shoes

You’ll wear the same rotation.

What We Regret Not Optimizing

1. Coffee Setup

This might sound insane—but it’s real.

Disney coffee is bad.

If you care about coffee:

→ bring a portable espresso setup

Game changer for mornings.

2. Better Pool Setup

If you’re staying at a resort:

→ bring proper swim gear

  • Third Wave trunks
  • sandals / slip-ons

3. Night Outfit (Worth It)

One night:

  • slacks
  • button-down or polo

Brands like:

  • Bonobos

Perfect for:

  • nicer dinners
  • resort evenings

What NOT to Bring (Seriously)

❌ Expensive Jewelry

You’ll take it off. You might lose it.

❌ Cash

You don’t need it.

Cards + MagicBand = everything.

❌ Too Many Suitcases

Traveling with kids = less is better.

❌ Too Many Toys

Your kid will acquire plenty.

Leave room in your bag.

If I Packed Again Tomorrow

Here’s exactly what I’d do:

  • 2 pairs of shoes
  • 3–4 lightweight outfits
  • 1 nicer dinner outfit
  • minimal gear
  • high-impact items only

That’s it.

The Bougie Dad Philosophy

You don’t need to overpack. You need to:

  • reduce friction
  • stay comfortable
  • make smart decisions

That’s what creates a high-end, low-stress trip.

Before You Book (Don’t Skip This)

Packing helps — but where you stay matters more.
