The Grand Floridian is Disney’s flagship resort.

It’s also one of the most expensive places you can stay at Walt Disney World. Period.

So the real question isn’t:

“Is it nice?”

Yes. Not Ritz or Four Seasons nice. But, among the best you can get on property.

No, the real question is:

Is it actually worth $800–$1,200 per night — and does it meaningfully improve your Disney trip?

My wife and I just got back from our third Disney trip in three years, staying at the Grand Floridian with our six-year-old.

Here is the honest answer.

Quick Verdict

Book the Grand Floridian if:

  • You want the easiest possible access to Magic Kingdom
  • You plan to take midday breaks
  • You value a calmer, more premium home base
  • You are doing a shorter (3–5 day) trip

Skip it if:

  • You are trying to minimize cost
  • You will spend almost no time at your hotel
  • You are comfortable relying on buses and longer travel times

Why This Decision Matters More Than You Think

Most families underestimate one thing: transportation.

Disney World is enormous.

Without a premium location, you will spend:

  • 30–60 minutes getting to and from parks
  • waiting on buses
  • navigating crowds at peak times

That time adds up quickly.

The Grand Floridian removes most of that friction.

Grand Floridian vs Other Disney Resorts

Here is how it actually compares:

Category Grand Floridian Moderate Resorts Value Resorts
Location Excellent Good Limited
Transportation Monorail + walk Bus / Skyliner Bus only
Convenience High Moderate Low
Price High Moderate Lower
Overall Experience Premium Solid Basic

You are not paying for a better room.

You are paying for time, flexibility, and a smoother overall experience.

What’s Changed (And Why It’s Better Now)

The Grand Floridian has quietly improved.

Recent updates include:

  • refreshed rooms
  • stronger quick-service options
  • improved dining flow
  • a more usable lobby

The lobby, in particular, feels different.

It is lighter, more open, and less formal than it used to be.

The addition of the birdcage-style lobby bar is subtle but important. It adds a refined, understated place to sit and decompress without feeling overly formal.

The resort still feels elevated, but it now fits how families actually travel.

The Real Advantage: Location

This is the primary reason to book the Grand Floridian.

You get:

  • walking access to Magic Kingdom
  • monorail access
  • easy access to nearby resorts

That proximity changes your day.

Instead of committing to being in the parks all day, you can move more freely.

Morning in the park.
Midday back at the hotel.
Evening return for rides and fireworks.

This is the difference between pushing through fatigue and pacing your trip correctly.

Dining and Overall Experience

This is another area where the Grand Floridian stands out.

You do not have to solve for food every day.

You have:

  • strong quick-service options
  • high-quality sit-down restaurants
  • access to nearby resort dining

Enchanted Rose

One of the best experiences at the resort is Enchanted Rose.

It is a Beauty and the Beast–inspired lounge that works for both adults and kids.

After a long day in Magic Kingdom, it is an ideal stop.

  • well-executed cocktails
  • small plates
  • thoughtfully designed rooms

Our daughter spent time walking around spotting details from the movie in the decor and bookshelves.

We appreciated having a place to sit down, reset, and have a drink without leaving the resort.

This is an easy win that most families overlook.

Gasparilla Island Grill

Do not miss Gasparilla Island Grill.

It is one of the best quick-service options on Disney property, especially in the morning.

  • efficient
  • high-quality
  • consistently reliable

If you want a smooth start to your day, this is one of the simplest ways to get it.

Walking to the Polynesian

From the Grand Floridian, you can walk to the Polynesian.

This opens up additional dining and experience options without needing transportation.

Wailulu Grill

Wailulu Grill is one of the best new dining additions.

  • upscale but relaxed
  • strong menu
  • well-executed cocktails
  • excellent fireworks views

The key detail is that you can walk there.

That removes friction and makes it easy to incorporate into your evening.

Nighttime Experience

This is an underrated advantage.

Between:

  • Enchanted Rose
  • the updated lobby bar
  • nearby resort access

you have a legitimate adult-friendly environment at night.

That is not something most Disney resorts offer.

Where It Falls Short

For a resort at this price point, there is one clear weakness.

The Courtyard Pool Bar is underwhelming.

  • limited drink selection
  • average food
  • nothing that stands out

Compared to newer or updated resorts like the Riviera or Wilderness Lodge, it feels behind.

It is not a dealbreaker, but it is noticeable.

Who Should Book This

The Grand Floridian is a strong fit if:

  • you want the easiest possible Disney experience
  • you are traveling with kids and need flexibility
  • you value proximity and downtime
  • you care about dining and atmosphere

Who Should Skip It

This is not the right choice if:

  • budget is your top constraint
  • you plan to spend all day in the parks
  • you will not use the hotel

In those cases, a Moderate resort is often the better decision.

How It Changes Your Trip

The Grand Floridian does not just give you a nicer room.

It changes how you experience the entire trip.

Most families:
stay far away
get stuck in the parks
become exhausted
push through the day

A better approach is:
stay close
take breaks
reset
return when it matters

That is where the value comes from.

If I Were Booking Today

If I were planning a Disney trip now:

  • I would book the Grand Floridian for a shorter trip (3–5 days)
  • use it as a base for midday breaks
  • prioritize walkability and dining

For longer trips, I would consider splitting time with a Moderate resort.

Factor Rating
Location 10/10
Convenience 10/10

The Grand Floridian is not perfect.

But if your goal is to make your Disney trip smoother, easier, and more enjoyable, it remains one of the best upgrades available.

For families who value time and flexibility, it is often worth it.
